About the Company

Flyglobespan is a subsidiary of The Globespan Group. The Globespan Group has been operating for nearly 35 years and has grown to become the 100th biggest mid market private company in Britain (HSBC Top Track 2008).

In May 2002 the company operated its first flyglobespan flight, from Edinburgh to Nice. Flyglobespan now operates flights to 23 destinations world-wide. The airline operates a huge choice of flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen as well as transatlantic flights from a variety of other UK hubs including Manchester, Gatwick and Belfast.

As well as flights, the group also offers accommodation packages with the option of car hire and transfers.

About the Chairman

Tom Dalrymple Tom Dalrymple left school aged 16 and began his career at Mackays Travel Agency in Edinburgh. During his time here he worked his way up through the ranks and developed his "can do, will do, happy to do" attitude.

His enthusiasm and passion for the travel industry lead him to secure control of a breakaway business travel agency in 1974, and rename it The Globespan Group.

In 2002 Tom was inspired to set up his own airline and Flyglobespan was born.

His "can do" attitude is still very apparent today and it is this willingness and confidence that has allowed Tom to make decisions that have helped to grow one of the most successful airlines in Britain today.

In 2008 Management Today Magazine voted Tom the 15th most successful entrepreneur in the UK, whilst in the same year The Herald Magazine named him one of "Scotland's Finest" ambassadors for his achievements in the field of travel and tourism.

SPAA Awards - Brian Potter, President of SPAA congratulates Judith Duffy, flyglobespan

We are delighted to announce that flyglobespan has won the award for Best Holiday Airline at this year’s prestigious Scottish Passenger Agents Association Awards, regarded by many as the Oscars for the Scottish travel trade industry.

Fighting off tough competition from Thomas Cook, Monarch, Virgin and Thomsonfly, flyglobespan scooped the coveted award at a glittering ceremony held at the Glasgow Hilton last week.

Commenting on the win, Rick Green, flyglobespan CEO said, "We are delighted with this award, which is all the more precious having been won in such a tough year for the travel industry. I would like to say a huge thank you to the support from our agents and also the hard work of my staff".

Oct 09 - Flyglobespan supports kilts for kids days

Kilts for Kids Kilts for Kids

Flyglobespan are proud to support Children’s 1ST! Flyglobespan aircrew have donned the official tartan to promote the company’s support for Kilts for Kids Day next month. On the day flyglobespan will be involved in various activities involving staff from across the company from Pilots and Cabin Crew to Office Staff and Reservation agents to help raise money for the charity.

CHILDREN 1ST is the working name of the Royal Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, which for over 125 years has been working to give every child in Scotland a safe and secure childhood. CHILDREN 1ST supports families under stress, protects children from harm and neglect, helps them recover from abuse and promotes children’s rights and interests. Last year was the first Kilts for Kids Day and over 260 organisations and schools across the country got involved, had great fun and helped us to make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable children across Scotland and raised over £85,000 for CHILDREN 1ST. All the money raised from Kilts for Kids Day will go to CHILDREN 1ST's work with some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children here in Scotland

Rick Green CEO of Scotland’s low fares airline said: "Flyglobespan is delighted to be supporting CHILDREN 1ST’s Kilts for Kids Day on 27 November."

"We will be encouraging our passengers to join with our cabin crew and wear tartan on all our flights on the day. We hope to raise as much money as possible for this great cause by collecting donations from passengers and staff on the day itself as well as offering up a number of Flyglobespan flights for auction at future events".

It’s easy to get involved in Kilts for Kids Day and do something tartantastic to raise money to help children and young people in Scotland. You can host a tartan day, have a dress down tartan day at work, organise a kiltaoke or a Scottish themed quiz night. The only question is "How will you wear yours?"

Sep 2009 - Flyglobespan launch 2 new direct flights from Edinburgh & Cardiff to Florida!

Edinburgh will get its first ever direct scheduled flights to Florida next summer as we launch a weekly service from the capital in 2010. Cardiff airport will also see a direct Cardiff to Florida service for the first time since 2008.

From next June, we will fly every Sunday from Edinburgh and on a Wednesday from Cardiff direct to Orlando Sanford - gateway to the sunshine, fantastic shopping and world class visitor attractions that Florida has to offer.

Flight only prices start from only £170 per person, with fly drive deals from only £375 and villa holidays starting from only £425. We also offer a Business Class service to the sunshine state with prices in this elite cabin available from only £699 per person, including taxes.

As Scotland’s leading holiday airline, we have a wealth of experience in catering for travellers to Florida. We launched Scotland’s first scheduled service to Florida with a Glasgow to Sanford route four years ago and have since taken over 150,000 holidaymakers to the sunshine state.

As Florida continues to attract thousands of British tourists each year, we are convinced the new direct services will prove popular with Welsh travellers & passengers in the East Coast of Scotland.

Spencer Birns, Head of Air Services Development at Cardiff Airport added; “It is great to see a direct Florida route back at Cardiff. Flyglobespan has realised the great opportunity which existed in serving the Welsh market and the strong demand in the region.

"We trust the Welsh market recognise the potential time and cost savings flying directly from Wales and fully support the service during 2010 to ensure its long term success."

"We will continue to work closely with flyglobespan and tourism partners to increase inbound visitors into Wales, with Cardiff Airport as the gateway to the country".

Talking about the new Edinburgh route the company’s Chief Executive Officer Rick Green said. "We are very excited about launching this route. It will give our customers from Edinburgh and the east of Scotland a direct link, for the very first time, to one of the world’s top holiday destinations".

"And, as is to be expected from flyglobespan, our flights and holidays to Florida will deliver the highest quality at great prices".

So with these new routes, up to 6 flights a week to Glasgow and our direct Belfast service there has never been a better time to visit Florida with Flyglobespan.

Sep 2009 - Flyglobespan looking for a bumper take-off as they launch 2010 flights.

Our Summer 2010 programme is now on sale…flights start from £41.99 and holidays from £135.

Being Scotland’s leading holiday airline we are looking to the future with confidence as we launch our 2010 summer programme.

With our customary varied offering from Glasgow and Edinburgh and an addition to our growing Aberdeen programme, we continue to lead the market in Scotland.

We have had some good performances this summer,” says Chief Executive Officer Rick Green. “We have had record load factors for certain months and a good steady demand throughout summer.

“But in these tight financial times, our customers are looking for the best deals available and we have worked very hard to bring them as competitive prices as possible.”

We have kept true to the promised expansion from Aberdeen by adding a new weekly service to Dubrovnik - the eighth destination now available from the north of Scotland. Flights to Dubrovnik from Aberdeen start from £66.99 with holidays from £319.

We have also noticed a steady increase in demand this year for all-inclusive holiday packages.

Rick Green explains: “These days, more and more holidaymakers like to have a better idea of exactly what their trip will cost them before they leave home and this year we saw a big increase in all-inclusive deals this year.

“We have increased our offering of these particular types of holidays for next year.”

“We know we have a good product that our customers enjoy and we look forward with optimism.”

Flyglobespan’s summer 2010 programme is available now. Customers can buy flight only or opt for the full holiday package including flights, accommodation and airport transfers.

Sep 2009 - New service to Dubrovnik as flyglobespan expands Aberdeen routes for 2010

Dubrovnik By Night

Aberdeen is to get its first scheduled service to the fast–expanding tourist attractions of Croatia – as we announce our programme for the summer 2010 season.

This summer’s destinations from Aberdeen – to Alicante, Cyprus, Dalaman, Faro, Malaga, Palma and Tenerife all return for the 2010 season.

Since first launching a Tenerife service, we have steadily expanded our Aberdeen programme and, despite the economic downturn affecting many aspects of the travel sector, their north east operation has continued to perform well.

“I am delighted with our Summer performance from Aberdeen,” says flyglobespan CEO Rick Green. “We want to give the people of the north east wide and varied holiday options from their own doorstep and have continually looked to sensibly grow our programme from there”.

“The response from the local population has been superb and we look forward to building on this and growing our programme in the future”.

“Dalaman was a new route for 2009 and that worked well. We look for Dubrovnik to have similar appeal as Croatia’s popularity grows”.

Prices for summer 2010 from Aberdeen start from only £61.99 for flights. Package holiday deals from Aberdeen start from only £169.

Jan 2009 - Flyglobespan moves back into profit despite sector difficulties

AS EUROPE’S AIRLINES SEE MARGINS FALL, SCOTLAND’S AIRLINE REVERSES TREND WITH STRONG PERFORMANCE

Flyglobespan has defied the gloomy industry statistics of last year and moved back into profit.

In a difficult year for the industry with high-profile casualties and gloomy results from some of the sector’s biggest names, the Scottish-based airline has returned to profit.

Ahead of the audited accounts, Chairman Tom Dalrymple has taken the opportunity to issue a strong trading statement – underlying the company’s recovery from the losses of its previous financial year.

“This year The Globespan Group will celebrate 35 years of successful trading, and I firmly believe that last year’s performance – in the trading conditions we faced – has been one of our best.

“Despite difficulties caused by the unprecedented increase in the cost of aviation fuel, we have turned round the problems of the previous year and are back into profit.”

The figures, when released later this year, will show that for year ending October 2008, the Globespan Group made a profit of £1.2million – reversing the industry trend which has seen overall profits fall within the sector in 2008.

IATA, the International Air Transport Association, is forecasting that 2008 will show that Europe’s airlines saw total profits drop 76 percent from the previous year. Globespan has totally outperformed this trend.

For the first time in their history, the Globespan Group posted significant losses for the year ending October 2007. Dalrymple insisted then that problems on their transatlantic routes, caused, in particular, by the poor performance of two planes leased from Icelandair, had been the prime factor in the company’s disappointing year.

“I said then that 2007 was a blip – a one-off year in what had been over 30 years of successful trading, and one that wouldn’t happen again. And I was right.

“We learned quickly from those experiences. Last year we flew only our own aircraft and the difference has been hugely satisfying – with record load factors for our sector.

“We are back into profit and, had the fuel rises not been so steep, that profit would have been considerably more. But, considering the difficulties of the sector, I have no complaints.

“I look at how our competitors faired last year and see big names talking about profits down 45 per cent, 47 per cent or even, in one national carrier’s case, 92 per cent. That shows how challenging a year it was, and in this context underlines how good our figures are.

“Our customer’s loyalty has always been one of our biggest strengths and we don’t take this for granted. It is clear that our core business model is working and we are delivering the product that our customers want.”

The airline has also strengthened its management team through the last year with new senior appointments in both operations and engineering, plus the arrival of a new Group CEO, Rick Green.

“We are extremely pleased with our performance, especially when you consider the difficult marketing conditions,” says Green.

“As Tom said, last year was a one off and the business is back to doing what it has always done – making profits!

“Looking forward, our sales and revenues are on plan. Our core routes for 2009 are holding their popularity and our new destinations in Turkey and Egypt are performing exceptionally well.

“We are in a good position but will never get complacent. By continuing to improve the standard of our product and listening to our customers we are confident that we will remain the number one choice for the Scottish travelling public.”

Concluding, Tom Dalrymple said, “Our outlook for the future is positive. Globespan has no debt, we have cash reserves built up from nearly 35 years of trading and we also have significant property assets.

“In addition, we have further developed the charter and ACMI side of our business and are now contracted to fly for a number of prestigious and profitable clients. These contracts include two high-profile Ministry of Defence deals, generating alternative and consistent revenue streams for the company”.

“In summary, our combined strengths and the company’s flexibility to adapt to the different demands of today’s market are what will ensure our success in these challenging times.”

Jan 2009 - A Burns supper at 30,000ft

Cabin crew with Irn Bru Burns suppers

Holidaymakers leaving Glasgow for sunny Alicante were treated to a surprise special Burns Supper, at 30,000 feet.

Flyglobespan, Scotland’s low cost airline, teamed up with IRN-BRU, the country’s other national drink, to ensure that these Scots could still celebrate Burns Day and the Year of the Homecoming.

The cabin crew made a toast to the haggis over the airwaves, before 148 passengers enjoyed a traditional meal of haggis, neeps and tatties, washed down with a bottle of IRN-BRU.

Flyglobespan's CEO Rick Green said: “This is certainly the first time we have had a Burns Supper on board one of our flights and it went down very well with all our passengers. The complimentary IRN-BRU was the perfect addition to the traditional Burns Suppers. It certainly was a fun flight for all onboard and was wonderful to partner with IRN-BRU to celebrate the anniversary of one of Scotland’s greatest poets.”

Jan 2009 - Flyglobespan supports homecoming 2009

Homecoming Scotland

Scottish airline flyglobespan has embarked on a marketing campaign with Visit Scotland to encourage oversees visitors to “flyhome” with the award winning airline for the Homecoming celebrations.

The joint activity includes a direct marketing campaign, online advertising and advertising in the events programmes, and will specifically highlight the flyglobespan routes from Toronto (Hamilton), Vancouver, Calgary and Nova Scotia (Halifax) into Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Commenting on the partnership, CEO Rick Green said, “We have always worked closely with Visit Scotland to support their activities in bringing overseas visitors to Scotland but, as a Scottish Airline with over 35 years of experience in travel to and from Canada, we are delighted to show our support of The Homecoming celebrations.”

Dec 2008 - High School Musical mania comes to Scotland!

High School Musical

Dec 2008 - Flyglobespan announces Glasgow to Halifax route

Nova Scotia

Glasgow is to offer a new transatlantic destination - thanks to flyglobespan.

Starting 27 May 2009, the airline is to fly to Halifax in Nova Scotia adding a new route to a substantial transatlantic programme that already offers flights to the USA and three other Canadian destinations.

Prices for the new route will start from only £179 including taxes as the airline looks to attract the friends and family business which is so much a part of the Scotland - Canada travel market.

Nova Scotia became home to many Scottish immigrants following the Highland Clearance, with the first Scots arriving in 1773 on ship Hector. Consequently the huge influence of Scottish culture is still very apparent in Nova Scotia today with various Celtic music festivals, highland games, an International tattoo and even a single malt whisky distillery.

The opportunity to add such a potentially attractive destination to the company programme has delighted flyglobespan chairman Tom Dalrymple.

“It is only right that Scotland’s airline should be flying into one of the most densely populated Scottish ex-pat areas in the world,” he insists.

“There is huge appetite from family travel both to and from Nova Scotia and Scotland and we are delighted we can offer the route at such affordable prices.

“And Scotland to Nova Scotia is one of the shortest routes across the Atlantic and therefore an ideal initial journey for those who want to go on and see more of the Continent.

The route was warmly welcomed by political and key tourism figures.

Scotland’s Enterprise Minister Jim Mather said: “This is great news and a welcome boost ahead of our Homecoming Celebrations in 2009.  This new flight between Halifax and Glasgow will provide a direct link to and from Scotland, improving international connections and tourism links between Scotland and Nova Scotia – a province with a very strong affinity to Scotland.

“The first Halifax to Glasgow flight will begin in May of the Year of Homecoming. With over 200 events nationwide to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns I hope that this flight will encourage ex-patriot Scots living in Nova Scotia or those with a love or connection to our great country to return home and join us in our the celebrations.”

VisitScotland’s Chief Executive Philip Riddle said: “This is fantastic news, particularly as it will give us another direct route from one of our key markets for Homecoming Scotland 2009. Halifax and Nova Scotia offer a great opportunity for Scottish tourism due to the large numbers of ancestral Scots – some 250,000 - living there.

“Our international Homecoming Scotland marketing campaign already targets Nova Scotia and this direct flight will help us attract even more visitors to Glasgow and the rest of Scotland next year. This is particularly good news for the Canadian travel agents and tour operators we are working with, who will capitalise on the benefits of non-stop service to Scotland.”

Amanda McMillan, Managing Director of Glasgow Airport, welcomed the new service. She said: "This is great news for transatlantic passengers, and for our tourist industry. It is particularly well timed given the forthcoming launch of Homecoming Scotland 2009.

“With more than 30 years experience flying to and from Canada, flyglobespan knows the market well. We wish them every success and look forward to working with them to deliver further growth from Glasgow."

Praise, too, from Rupert Peters, UK Managing Director of the Canadian Tourism Commission. He said: "Nova Scotia's popularity continues with nearly 30,000 heading that way from the UK in 2008.  With Halifax only six hours away from Britain, flyglobespan's new route demonstrates that Canada is so easy to get to and explore."

The new Glasgow – Halifax flight will operate every Wednesday from 27 May until 14 October 2009 and is available to book online.

Nov 2008 - Tom Dalrymple honoured in Scotland’s Finest

Tom Dalrymple Awarded

Scotland’s Finest, a tribute to the nation’s ambassadors, has acknowledged Tom Dalrymple’s for his achievements in the field of travel and tourism in 2008.

Tom Dalrymple is the founder and Chairman of Scottish low-cost airline flyglobespan, which offers customers a choice of flights and holidays to 23 destinations worldwide.

The annual list, which is compiled by The Sunday Herald, highlights Scotland’s movers and shakers of Scotland in a range of fields including the Arts, Food & Drink, Politics, Design & Fashion, Sports and Beauty.

Nov 2008 -Globespan flying high with £40m winter lease deals

£40 Million MOD Deal

flyglobespan has announced a huge boost to revenue as a result of winning a second MoD contract.

This five month contract will see another flyglobespan 767 300ER flying to Qatar from the RAF Brize Norton from December.

“This is splendid news for the airline,” says Tom Dalrymple, flyglobespan’s Chairman.

“Once again flyglobespan has demonstrated that we have the expertise to secure highly-prized contracts like this.”

“These high profile MoD contracts and other new recently-negotiated arrangements which we have over the winter will generate over £40million worth of revenue at a time when the UK holiday market is at its most quiet.

“It means we are maximising the earning potential of our assets at a crucially important part of the year. In addition to the plane, we also supply the flight deck and cabin crew. So this new MoD deal alone means five-month additional work for up to 60 of our employees which, again, is good news.”

Having watched the downfall of a number of airlines in a tumultuous year for the industry, Dalrymple has ensured that flyglobespan has heeded the lessons from these rivals’ failures.

“Other carriers mothball chunks of their fleet and lay off huge numbers of staff during the winter. Our strategy means continued work for more of our employees at a time when others are making staff redundant.”

Apart from the Falklands service (a four-year arrangement) all the planes will be back in time for the airline’s peak summer programme next year and Dalrymple is pleased at the progress of advanced sales.

We are enjoying a good year and this recognition is the icing on the cake. I am hugely grateful to both my staff and our loyal customers for helping us to achieve this milestone."

Oct 2008 - Flyglobespan wins ministry of defence contract

The Ministry of Defence’s South Atlantic airbridge contract has been awarded to award-winning airline, flyglobespan. The twice-weekly flights from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire to Ascension Island and the Falklands will be operated on the airline’s Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, commencing in October.

The B767-300 aircraft is to carry up to 184 civilian and government passengers on each flight, with the remaining payload taken with freight.

The contract was won after flyglobespan offered the most economical advantageous solution to the MoD’s passenger, aero-medical and freight requirements.

Tom Dalrymple, Chairman for flyglobespan said, “We are of course very pleased to have won this prestigious contract which is testament to our expertise in this product field.

“Charter flights such as these are an important part of the flyglobespan business model and winning this Ministry of Defence contract is further indication of how successfully we are doing this.

“We pride ourselves on the service we offer to both charter clients and general passengers and are delighted that The Ministry of Defence has recognised this and put their trust in flyglobespan to operate a superior and cost effective service.”

Flight to Lapland

Last month flyglobespan operated a charter flight to Lapland, helping to make the Christmas wishes of many severely ill Scottish children come true when they got to meet Santa Claus in his Arctic home.

18 children suffering life-threatening illnesses went on the day trip, organised by cancer charity FACE (Fighting Against Cancer in Edinburgh), based at Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital.

Trustee of FACE, and one of the organisers of the trip, John MacAulay MBE, thought the trip was a resounding success saying, “The way the team handled our particular needs for children were outstanding. The image and approach given by this flight crew is a credit to the company.”
